Year 4 Curriculum Overview
Literacy
We tie the literacy objectives to our topic work where possible therefore creating a dynamic and meaningful learning experience. This also gives us the opportunity to do exciting things like video presentations and hold competitions.
Maths
We follow the Primary Framework which allows us to engage the children in more practical areas of maths, e.g. cooking, manipulating polydron, collecting data (science) and construction work (DT).
History
In history we study the Tudors; Henry VIII and his 6 wives, Rich and Poor and Tudor Exploration! We organise a terrific Tudor day where the children experience what it was like to be a Tudor child. The activities include archery, jousting, hunting, making marchpane, calligraphy, sewing traditional belt pockets and Tudor banqueting!
Geography
Our geography topics take us on a journey to India, studying weather patterns and climates and exploring environmental issues and changes in our Through the Window topic.
Science
We cover 6 different topic areas throughout the year; Moving and Growing, Forces, Keeping Warm, Solids and Liquids, Habitats and Circuits and Electricity!
Games
A year 4 favourite with the children and the teachers, our games lessons include; Netball, Football, Cross-country, Tag Rugby, Circuits, Dance, Cricket, Gymnastics, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis and of course Rounders!
ICT
During our ICT lessons we apply a cross curricular approach to the children’s learning. We use word processing packages to create newspaper reports, Picassa and colour magic for art topics and maths, internet for research, in science we use branching databases and 2Simple2Animate to create habitat films as well as using the mini laptops for in class research!
DT/Art
Once again these areas are developed to be cross-curricular. In DT we sew Christmas decorations, we construct authentic Tudor houses and we build shelters in the Summer term. In art we start by looking at People In Action, which relates to our science topic, Moving and Growing. To support our Indian work we study Indian art to develop our printing skills. Our final topic sees us studying the work of Henri Rousseou. We take his ideas to form our clay work, which reflects our science topic Habitats.
PSHE
The whole school follows the SEAL Scheme
RE
We cover the Creation Stories, Holy Books, Founders and Prophets and Pilgrimage.
Music
We follow the Music Express scheme for Year 4.
