Haddenham Community Junior School offers a broad and balanced curriculum.
The school has a topic based curriculum which ensures coverage of the National Curriculum while allowing the children a more creative real life experience of education.
Partnerships with Princes Risborough Upper School, Waddesdon CE School and The Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School provide opportunities to extend and enrich the curriculum.
Numerous educational visits and visiting speakers/groups are an integral part of each year group’s curriculum. This offers a wide range of opportunities and experiences.
Sex Education / Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education (PSCHE)
Sex education is taught during year 6. All discussion is presented in the context of family life, loving relationships and of respect for others, i.e. a moral framework.
Parents are invited to the school to view the material used prior to this area of the curriculum being taught.
The school's PSCHE curriculum is designed to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development of the children at school and of society, and to prepare our pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. We believe the school has a responsibility to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding from which they can make informed choices and decisions with regard to their present and future lifestyles. We follow the SEAL scheme of work for this part of the curriculum.
Religious Education
The aim of RE is to contribute to the development of pupils as individuals and members of society by fostering a reflective approach to life in the context of a growing understanding of experiences, attitudes, beliefs and religious practices. Where parents wish their child to be withdrawn from RE they are asked to discuss this with the Head Teacher prior to submitting a written request.
Sport
The school strongly believes in the benefits of sporting activities. All children are encouraged to participate in the wide range of sports available at HCJS, making the most of the excellent grounds available. Children are taught the basic skills of individual and team sports such as football, hockey, netball, rounders and cross-country. The opportunity to attend swimming lessons at a local pool is also part of the school curriculum. We are also fortunate enough to have links with the village tennis club. We have a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) in our extensive grounds .
Wherever possible the school participates in local school competitions and leagues. Over the years we have attained excellent results in various sports. Although sports within the curriculum are taught during school hours, many sports activities are followed through by attendance at the after school clubs.
Modern Foreign Languages
French is taught from Y3 in all classes either by the class teacher or a qualified French speaking assistant.
